Robin Whiteman was born in upstate NY, and has been working with clay since the age of twelve. She worked under Richard Hirsch at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of American Crafts where she received a degree in ceramics in 1994.
Along with creating her unique ceramic sculpture, Whiteman has worked extensively as an artist in residence at several public and private schools, and mentors students of all ages. She has created large tile murals with local students and co-created multiple murals for Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester,
NY. In 2018 Whiteman’s sculpture was purchased for the permanent collection of The Memorial Art Gallery In Rochester, NY, and shown at Aqua Art Miami during Miami art week, as well as the Chicago Expo. Her work is shown across the US, and collected internationally.
Though always a figure sculptor, Whiteman’s works have gone from life size to much smaller and more delicate through the years, most noticeably with the birth of her daughter. She continues to work with a variety of clay bodies.
Robin uses human and animal forms to play with notions of duality and “beingness”. She sees everything as connected, constantly changing, and utterly mysterious, emerging from a place of openness and wonder.
