Mundane Marvels /

Paintings by Jennifer Small

On view Sept 25 - Nov 6

Mundane Marvels sheds light on the parts of my everyday environment that engage my curiosity. These moments possess engaging visual interest, are captured with a photo, and used as a component in my paintings. This collection of works from 2017–2021 tell the story of my movements through time and space by elevating banal objects to characters in my representational, abstract, autobiographical narratives brought to life with color, shape, line, and texture.

Jennifer Small is an abstract painter whose work is about elevating visual curiosities observed in overlooked banality resulting in the analysis of her personal journey. The work, while formalist at first glance, is a record of a day in the life–a process which starts with photographic documentation. The compiled frames collected after narrowing down the panoramic represent blocks of time and place during the process of experiencing her daily routine. The collection of sightings are broken down and combined to become the lines, shapes, and patterns of the paintings while the color palette is left to the imagination.

Small, a Pennsylvania native, received her BFA in Painting and BS in Art Education from Millersville University in 2005 and MFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012. She has exhibited her work in galleries and fairs in Philadelphia, Washington, DC, New York, Richmond, Savannah, and Chicago. Media features have included New American Paintings, Studio Visit Magazine, Studio Break Podcast, and various other blogs and online publications. Formerly a high school art educator in the Washington DC and Chicago areas, Jennifer now lives and works as a painter and visual designer in Wilmington, Delaware.
