Rebecca Aloisio, Pierced Through an Empty Sky, 24” x 18”, printed collage mounted on aluminum, 2023

New York-based artist Rebecca Aloisio has been exploring the medium of collage and mixed media for the past several years. Originally earning her BFA in sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art, Aloisio uses her knowledge of 3-dimensional space and material to inform her imagery.

Aloisio received her MFA from Syracuse University and currently teaches in the College of Art and Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant and has had solo exhibitions at the University of Rochester, the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, NY, and Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo, NY.

REBECCA ALOISIO / ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My practice explores the postmodern notion of simulacra, which refers to the representation of something that does not have an original reality. It investigates the idea that much of our contemporary imagery is constructed and staged, creating a facade that we perceive as reality. By exploring this concept, the artwork prompts viewers to question the authenticity and truthfulness of the images they see before them.

This new body of work focuses specifically on the notion of the ‘void’ in relation to physical and personal experience. Within the images, voids are present in the form of gaps, emptiness, or hollows and have been “filled in” or “replaced” with subtle yet evocative shapes, forms, locations, and patterns. The process involves the use of sculptural imagery, photography, and painting, combining traditional analog techniques with digital technologies. Similar to the transformative journey of Frankenstein's creation, this new work aims to depict the constant evolution and mutation of our collective experiences, as well as the profound influence of technology on the human condition, raising the question of, what has been lost?

SARAH KINARD / ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My work deals with balance and the delicate nature of tension. Combining my intuition and analytical thought processes, my work examines the experiences that underline my emotional and physical development. I construct visual environments that combine these dichotomies to produce a world on the verge of combustion. These visual recordings use deconstructed industrial fragments that capture the rhythm of cause and effect, simulating the process of sorting cognitive dissonance. These resulting worlds reaffirm my desire to find meaning in rebuilding from the pieces of emotional and physical fallout.
